Marie Cecile weds Duke Friedrich August in civil rites

December 3, 1965

Princess Marie Cecile of Prussia, a great-granddaughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II, was married today in a civil ceremony to Duke Friedrich August of Oldenburg, reports the New York Times.

The 23-year-old Princess is a daughter of Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, oldest surviving son of the former Crown Prince Wilhelm, and head of the House of Hohenzollen.

Duke Friedrich August, 29, is an agricultural expert.

More than 700 spectators, mostly elderly women, gathered outside the city hall of Schmargendorf, a residential suburb, to cheer the couple.

The Lutheran religious ceremony will take place tomorrow at the Kaiser Memorial Church, a landmark in downtown Berlin.

The "tall dark-haired Princess" wore a grayish pink tweed coat and a small fur hat."  Tomorrow she will be dressed in a "floor-length white gown," designed by Uli Richter, Berlin's top designer.

After the wedding the couple will live in Africa, as the Duke is a development consultant in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
